Winter Hair Care – Get Rid of Flakey Scalp

Last Updated on September 16, 2024 by David Thomas

Winter (2022) was definitely one for the books. I had a bunch of clients come in with dry flakey scalps. So as we reach the middle of winter I’d like to share a few tips to help with your possible dry skin and scalp.

Check out my Winter Haircare Product List

#1 USE THE CORRECT SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

Winter can dry out your hair, leaving it brittle and fragile. Try mixing in a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner. This will help seal some moisture onto your hair strands.

You can also follow up your wash with any of your favorite natural oils and creams to help seal in more moisture.

Especially those with coarse hair.

You need as much moisture as possible.

Choose the correct shampoo and conditioner

#2 TAKE A BREAK FROM CHEMICALS

Chill on the chemicals in your hair

Hair color, perms, activators, bleach, etc., can leave hair brittle, which is the last thing you need during the dry months.

#3 CHILL ON THE HOT WATER

Extremely hot water has been shown to irritate scalps, which can lead to dandruff and flakey scalps.

Stick to lukewarm.

No more hot water

#4 TRY AN OIL OR DEEP CONDITION TREATMENT

Oil treatments

I love these treatments. They leave your hair a scalp feeling clean, soft, and moisturized.

Please note that deep conditioner is slightly different than regular conditioner. However, if you or your significant other has a hair dryer that you can sit under, a regular conditioner could work.

Either way, you’re going to apply a generous amount of conditioner to clean hair & throw on a shower cap.

Let sit for 20+ minutes. Then rinse.

#5 USE A SILK OR SATIN PILLOWCASE

As listed before in my hair-thinning blog.  Cotton dries out your hair and scalp. Try using a silk/satin pillowcase, wrap or durag to help retain your natural oils.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I hope you all are staying warm and keeping that hair healthy for when the sun is shining bright again.
