Aftershave Shouldn’t Hurt – Try Out This Natural Alternative

Last Updated on June 12, 2024 by David Thomas

You’re sitting in the barber’s chair, feeling fresh and sharp after a perfectly executed haircut. The barber makes the final snips and adjustments, ensuring every hair is in place. As he reaches for the finishing touch, the aftershave, you brace yourself. You know what’s coming next: that familiar sting as the alcohol makes contact with your skin.

That sharp, eye-watering burn is a sign that the aftershave is doing its job, right? Not necessarily. While it may be killing bacteria and leaving a clean scent, it’s also leaving your skin irritated and dry. But what if there was a way to finish your grooming routine with a soothing, refreshing feel instead of that painful sting? Enter the world of alcohol-free aftershaves, where comfort meets effectiveness. Let’s explore how I came up with my very own alcohol-free aftershave that’s gentle on the skin yet just as effective in delivering that satisfying post-shave feel.

We have all seen memes of clients jumping out of chairs when their barbers use alcohol-based aftershaves. It’s only funny because it’s true and relatable. Not only does this hurt, but it is actually terrible for the skin.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like putting my clients through that.

Natures Medicine

I’ve discovered that many of our everyday issues can be solved using natural ingredients. By being more mindful of what I put in and on my body, I’ve found that natural solutions often work best. Today, I want to share my recipe for a natural and soothing alternative to traditional aftershave. I’ve been using this mixture for over five years and have experienced no complaints, breakouts, or discomfort.

The key ingredient in this natural remedy is Witch-Hazel.

Witch-Hazel has been shown to relieve inflammation, reduce skin irritation, fight breakouts, and even help with skin conditions like Psoriasis

The next ingredient is the antioxidant-rich Aloe Vera.

It’s rich in micronutrients like Vitamin C and Vitamin E. It’s super moisturizing, which softens the skin. Adding to that, it also fights infections and acne.

Now, Witch-Hazel has a strong floral scent, so I like to add my favorite combination of essential oils to help with the smell. The essential oils that I use the most are Lavender, Tea-tree, and Peppermint. They all have their own sets of benefits as well.

I mix all of this with some vegetable glycerin to hold it all together, which also has moisturizing benefits.

Make sure you shake well before you use the mixture. It can be applied just like traditional aftershave. Sometimes the solution might separate but it’s totally fine to use again.

Other Good Practices

Make sure to keep your clippers:

  • Regularly Cleaned
  • Regularly Sharpened
  • Regularly Oiled

If your clippers are adjusted correctly, there is less friction on the skin.

A quick tip: Always try the clippers on the soft part of your skin before using them on your clients.

Other Premixed alcohol-free aftershaves
