10 Hair Care Tips for Men with Thin Hair

Last Updated on June 26, 2024 by David Thomas

Facing thinning hair or a receding hairline can be daunting, but panicking won’t make your hair come back. Instead, empower yourself with knowledge and proactive strategies to maintain and enhance your hair’s health. This guide delves into ten crucial tips to manage thinning hair effectively and boost your confidence. Let’s explore how to optimize your hair care routine and keep your hair looking its best.

10 Tips for Men With Thin Hair

1. Know Your Hair Type

It’s essential to know your hair type and use the right products for it. Using the wrong products for your hair type could do more harm than good. For example, if you have fine, straight hair and you’re using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, you could be weighing your hair down, making it seem too flat. Not having volume in thinning hair could expose your thinning even more.

The classic Andre Walker Hair typing Chart categorizes hair from Type 1 (straight hair) to Type 4 (kinky hair).

Once you know your hair type, you’re ready to choose the right shampoo and conditioner.

2. Stay Away from Combovers

Combovers are a style best left in the past. Not only are there trendier options, but a combover—pushing all hair over to one side when already thinning—can cause additional stress to your hair and make it weaker and thinner. Opt for more natural textured forward styles that help cover the thinning areas. 3. Don’t Use Heavy Products

Heavy products with lots of waxes and ingredients can weigh your hair down and strip it when you wash it out, making it more likely to fall out and become thinner. Instead, opt for lighter water-based styling products like pomades, sea salt sprays, and texture powders.

4. Medicated Shampoos

Consider integrating medicated shampoos from reputable brands like Pura D’or and Bosley into your routine. These products often contain DHT-blocking ingredients like saw palmetto and caffeine, which can also help promote hair growth.

Check out this LIST for more alternatives.

5. Eat Whole Foods

Besides genetics, hair thinning is typically caused by a poor diet lacking efficient vitamins and nutrients. Using a nutrient-dense, whole-food diet can be one of the best ways to get healthy hair. You can read the full blog post on nutritious whole foods for health hair.

6. Leave the Biotin Supplements Behind

Biotin (vitamin B7) is often touted as the best way to promote hair growth. However, science and research are still inconclusive about its effectiveness. If you are going to use it, an effective dose is just 30mcg, which can be easily achieved through a healthy diet with a few eggs.

7. Try Supplements

There are many all-natural supplements that can stimulate hair growth. Some of my favorites are reishi mushrooms, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed extract, ashwagandha, and rosemary oil. Brands like MOON Juice and Nutrafol have shown the most promise in this category. However, they aren’t cheap, averaging around $50-80 for a 30-day supply.

Please note: Taking supplements isn’t a quick fix. After 2-3 months of consistent use, expect to see results.

8. PRP Treatments

Platelet-rich plasma PRP treatments are fairly new to the market but research seems promising. It uses concentrated platelets from your own blood to help with hair growth. Most insurance won’t cover this treatment, and prices range between $400-$600 per injection.

Here’s a video that can explain in more detail.

9. Enhancements

Short term: Hair dye or fibers can give you a fuller hairline or beardline or simply cover up any thinning spot in the hair and can easily done by your barber. This method is temporary and will wash out the same day that you shampoo.

You can also get a Man Unit, which will give you that full head of hair you’re looking for! Usually done by a barber or stylist. I only recommend this The process takes about 2 hours and will last you 2-3 weeks with proper care. If women can do it, why not nen?

A permanent enhancement option is SMP (scalp micropigmentation), which can replicate a realistic short hairstyle. Imagine the Vin Diesel look.

10. Hair Transplants

If you have the finances, hair transplants are a great option. I have clients who have flown to Turkey, Mexico, and the States for them.

The thing to note here, though, is that you’ll be prescribed medication [Minoxidil, Finasteride, Dutasturide ] to prevent future hair loss. Once you start taking, you can’t get off, or your results will disappear.

Please weigh the pros and cons of taking this prescription before you get it done!

Check out the in-depth video from Andrew Huberman (listed below), in which he breaks down the biology of hair, hair growth, why hair growth slows, and what causes hair to stop growing and/or “fall out.”

And here’s a bonus one: Manage your Stress. Stress is one of the biggest causes of hair loss, so try to eliminate it and maintain a positive self-image!
